List of 7 Seater Cars In Australia
As the family grows you will probably look at your options on what you can get them around in. The good thing is that there is now a wide range of cars available on the market, including medium to large SUVs, mini vans and people movers that can seat up to 8 people.
The vehicles vary from front wheel drives and rear wheel drives to all wheel drives and 4 wheel drives - a bit confusing. Basically, all wheel drives and 4 wheel drives can offer added power and safety as all 4 wheels are being used to move the car. Whether you need a 4 wheel drive will depend on how you intend to use the car. For example, if off-roading is going to be something that you do on a regular basis then a 4 wheel drive could be your most suitable option.
What Models are Popular?
The Kia Carnival has been the top selling people mover in Australia over the past couple of years, while the Honda Odyssey continues to receive accolades from motoring organisations around Australia.
In the SUV market, the Ford Territory is popular as is the Toyota Prado and Holden Captiva. Click here to read our review on the Captiva.
When it comes to luxury 7 seater SUVs, the Volvo XC90, BMW X5 and Land Rover Discovery are some of the most popular models.

(16 awaiting approval)Hi there, we are expecting twins and already have a 14yo, 4yo and a 9mo. We will need a car / van / suv / people mover that can comfortably seat 4 anchored seats and be able to fit a twin pram fitted with a toddler seat (VERY BULKY) in the boot and perhaps the day's groceries. We are a single-income family so a car (obviously used) will need to say come in well under $30k. I would love to hear your recommendations.
Hi, I am after a 7 seater, 2wd, around $17000, 5 star safety rating if possible. Reliable , with plenty of space. Any recommendations? Thanks.
We have 4 children under 5, including newborn twins. Had a huge dilemma deciding on the car but got a Mercedes GL which is fantastic, everyone fits and enough Room in the boot for the pram. We love it and bought second hand which saved a lot. Twins are next to each other in the second row which means loading the 2 and 4 year old in the 3rd row very easy. Looked at the Kia, Volvo, Audi q7, none of them were as roomy or as good.
Hi, We want a 7 seater car which is good and spacious and on the other hand very cheap below 15 grand. we have 4 kids.
We are looking to have a third child and wanted to know if the new kluger and ford territory would fit 2 maxi rider booster seats and a baby seat? Any thought as to what car out of the 2 you would recommend?
Holden/Opel Zafira should probably be on this list too. Small 7-seater MPV.
If it interests anyone, I have 4 children under 6 and have a Kia Grand canival, I know the whole mini van thing is not the greatest aspect of having a large family, I went from a Honda CRV to the Kia, apart from the obvious spec changes I have found the Kia very practical, Room to move, grow and even fit, two bikes, pram, scooters and all things for a great day out with out thinking about the space! The other good thing is at shopping car parks the kids wont throw the car door onto other cars causing unsightly repair jobs!! In saying this.... Yes its big and ugly but I do think of this as NOT my forever car and yes I do dream of owning a tiny two door sports car with no car seats, but at the moment the ugly mini van is just the way it has to be as I enjoy watching my kids grow up and yes, pick up there friends!!
hi there im looking for a used 7 seater (tight budget lol!) id be needing 3 anchor points and room for a lanky 9 year old, plus a mother inlaw when needed.( Im thinking she may not want to climb across seats). its driving me nuts trying to find something suitable! Have been told to steer clear of the kias for the engine issues prior to 2006, and the chrysler voyager for the costs of service and repairs!! HELP PLEASE!!
Hi all Holden Captiva LX or CX model both come with 7 seater leather option for CX and its Diesel option 2L turbo as well reasonable price as well ....... i am looking for 1 my self
good luck to all God bless you nice site
The prices are hard to find, but if you go to places like www.carsguide.com.au or sites like it, you can generally find a price range of new and/or used cars in your area. This is what I'm using for a price guide.
The Mercedes E class wagon also has 7 seats
I've had 3 kids (initially newborn, 3 and 5) all in car seats across the back of my subaru outback for a few years now. If you only have 3 kids you don't always need 3 rows of seats, just the perfect car seats for your kids. It's cheaper and so much more convenient with 3 babies or young kids to get the right and safest child restraint seats rather than a third row of seats. I found that I needed to be within arms length of my kids while they were little and a third row of seats puts them so far away and you lose you boot space which is necessary with prams. Worth looking at this option if you only have 3 kids but they are all in car seats. Still working for me with kids aged 2,5 and 7.
We have 4 children 13, 7, 7 and 3 and own a BMW X5. Have had it for 2 years from new and would not recommend this car as a family mover. My twins sit in the 3rd row and are almost too big for that row. Would never suit adults. There are no anchorage points there either.
To get into the 3rd row, you have a lever on the second row (passener side) to pull which folds 2 of the 2nd row seats down. This means you can only have an anchored car seat in one spot of the second row seat (behind the driver seat) which means kids are entering and exiting car on opposite side to Aussie kerbs for the third row.
We have also had problems with the computer resetting itself constantly and stopping altogether and the finger pulled park brake falling off after 6 months. rear view camera very poor quality and beeps even if you are a metre away from anything.
Also managed to lock my child in the car after strapping her in and throwing keys over the seat to the drivers seat. Shut her door and went to open drivers door. All locked out? Not even sure what happened. Very scary and very hard to smash window in a BMW. (Glass is a safety feature though I guess)
Had a Toyota Sahara before this car. Loved it and great for families. Just too big for the school yard.
Choose an x5 for safety and nothing else. Go the Toyota for practicality and resale.
Will the 2012 jeep dodge Chrysler caravan be selling in Australia
Hi all...any reviews about Mazda MPV to compare with the above??? We had one few years ago and loved the space inside. Cheers.
On the arrival of our 4th child we bought a Kia Carnival 2001. Got bitten by the 80%+ engine failure and vowed never to buy another Kia. Bought a 1999 Prado which seats 8 and its been excellent for our needs. Didnt really want a 4wd but Toyota reliability has won me over big time. The seating in the back row is not very roomy but suitable for 3 little kids. There are baby seat anchors for the 2 side back seats and the 2 side middle seats. Access into the back row is not easy especially relocating a sleeping child. Boot space with all seats in place is tight but folding up one back seat frees a lot of room (leaving you with 6 seats).
We have a Mitsubishi Grandis which worked for our family when we had 3 in baby seats. We want to get a new car and were going to go straight into another Grandis but they are no longer importing them. While looking for other options we've come across 2 more cars not on your list - MERCEDES VITO/VIANO (quite xxxy) and SUBARU LIBERTY EXIGA. Hope this helps someone.
We have a 2 and 4 year old and now twins expected. We are looking at the Audi Q7 but are concerned about the space in the back and also trying to load my 4 year old into the 3 rd row of seats which would also mean I would have to remove a child seat from row 2 each time I took all 4 kids out and about.. Does anyone have the Q7 with 4 kids under 5?
We currently have a 2011 seven seat Kluger which we bought when we discovered we were having another child (we already have an 8 and a 4 year old). After taking delivery of the Kluger we found out we were expecting twins. The Kluger is absolutely beautiful and contrary to another post here drives as quietly and smoothly as any Toyota does ( It shares very little in common with the Prado and only comes in V6 Petrol/auto) . It is the smoothest V6 I have ever driven and is loaded with features. I would highly recommend a Kluger to anyone however since getting the twins home we have realised that with two baby capsules, one booster seat and an 8 year old I cannot fit our pram in without spending 10 minutes totally dismantling it. I am now looking at a new Kia Grand Carnival. I was very hesitant as the older Carnivals had a terrible name for destroying motors but from what I have learnt researching these cars they have developed into a very capable people mover. The big selling point for me is the anchor points for 5 seating positions and the large boot to fit the twin pram without pulling it to pieces. Is anyone aware of any other large people movers that have 5 child restraint anchor points. I have looked at 4wds but anything smaller than a troop carrier will not fill my needs.
I have a kia grand carnival and 5 kids from 1 - 14. I have no problems with the space. We have the 8th seat pulled out but it is so easy to put back in. Took it for a service today and was given an x trail as a lone car. Couldn't wait to get my carnival back. Everyone who drives it comments on the comfort. Heavier on fuel than I would like but good pick up when needed. I love all my extras, cruise control, sunroof, electric doors and tailgate are a life saver when juggling kids and shopping.
We are looking for a 7 or 8 seaster car (5 kids) that has enough room for luggage that comes with a large family. We also need it powerful enough to tow a caravan around 2000kg. There are some budget constraints but would appreciate any feedback. So far I cannot find a suitable car as once you have the third row seating there is not much boot space left. We currently have a territory that is just ok but roomier would be better.
Can anyone help? We need a car that will fit three child seats across but under 25K. Nothing is off the cards, all options considered.
Do you have a list of any of the ones that are in manual??? They seem a little thin on the ground but as old fashioned as it is, I just love manuals? Any lists?
Hi! Just looking for a 7 seater but short budget..... we are trying to decide between a Honda Oddysey 07 - 08 or a Mitsubishi outlander 08 - 09. Any recommendation please?
if you haven't road tested them already, here's my testing experience thus far:
Peugeot's are very good value, esp. second hand, economical to run and well appointed; while the style may not be to your taste are great; there are a couple of models to choose, however the folding 3rd row seating is not of high quality, and really only suited to child seats/boosters.
Citroën C4 is comparable to a fully optioned Peugeot, looks and feels very similar, many features of the interior are clearly better than the Peugeot, such as the exceptional folding seats, but the price is substantially higher, unless you love it's quirky looks you will find far better value elsewhere.
Mazda CX9 is undoubtedly a good looker, loaded with features, and an easy drive, but you don't need to look far to find build quality issues; many of the items you might expect as standard are costly extras and the fuel consumption is amongst the highest.
Volvos are easily the best all round, with safety features second to none (ie. 3rd row curtain airbags not even an option for most manufacturers are now standard on Volvo) and most of the options you find in the BMW/Benz/Audi you won't miss given the money you save; build quality / reliability very close to German, although you might be cautious with second hand models, they're a mixed bag, I've found.
Ford Territory has reinvigorated its appearance and under the hood, but the new pricing that came with it puts it into a different class, so I think you'll find the competition offers better value features; second hand might be a good buy.
Toyota Kluger is their best value 7 seater and there are often deals on special versions, which are worth looking out for -- the extra features are well worth it for a family car, most of the options on the base model Toyotas are standard with Korean/European models -- when you take the price into consideration, the Kluger is not cheap; the Kluger is no joy to drive, having a lot in common with the LandCruiser Prado, it's ungainly handling and the diesel's noisy motor are somewhat offputting, (not the soft purr of a new French, German or Swedish turbodiesel); visibilty is average, you'll probably want to make sure you have a reversing camera, but otherwise the high driving position is a plus, the Kluger will go pretty much anywhere.
For a few extra dollars, the Subaru Tribeca is worth a look; I didn't see anything worth the money although it comes with a few more bells and whistles as standard, if you love Subaru you might appreciate the boxer engine, which offers a little more performance/fuel efficiency than the Toyota, but with every generation these two cousins are becoming more similar, second hand Tribeca's are good value, but arguably painful to the eye and very rare.
Kia Sorrento/Hyundai Santa Fe/Daewoo (Holden) Captiva -- the Koreans are quickly catching up to the Japanese in design and build quality, especially the Hyundai's -- they are terrific value brand new, excellent equipment lists, and warranty, driveability/handling is on par with the Kluger/Territory the Kia slightly less, the only pressing issue to consider is resale, which will be much worse than the alternatives, but if you plan to hold onto it till 100,000km+ it's probably not an issue.
Land Rover Discovery 3 is probably one of my favourites for looks thanks to its classy, unique shape; the excellent mechanics shared with it's sportier brother Range Rover, giving it a smooth ride up and down the steepest of hills, you will barely feel an incline in any direction, however this is no city/suburban people mover, the torque comes with the compromise of acceleration, the turbo diesel is a slug at taking off, and on the freeway most trucks will be passing you before you reach cruising speed; the interior is durable, heavy leather, not soft like the Swedes/Germans, but you never need worry about your kids ripping holes in it with their schoolbags; there is a 3rd row but the leg room is only for tots, the forward visibility is great from every seat due to the tiered seating, but at a cost of almost no rear-view visibility (reversing camera absolute must), the price doesn't include a lot of extras you will get with cheaper models, but this Brit will keep going for a generation.
I had hoped the Tesla Model S would sell here at a sensible price, but the first 7-seat electric costing US$50K, will be launched here for AU$120-140K, too rich for most.
We are yet to test the new Subaru Liberty Exiga which offers 6 seats.
Hi wondering if there is a 7 seater car around the $15000 mark? New or Used i dont know all i know is all the car sales men go straight to the $30000 dollar cars and thats a bit steep for me?
Great list. Can we also have it updated with the number of anchor points, esp if it has them in the 3rd row of seats. No point having 7 seats if we can't use the back ones. Thanks.
Hi everyone - my partner has 2 tall teenage boys & we've just found out we're expecting twins! Any suggestions of what vehicle we could look at which can fit teens, babies in car seats + a double pram? We're not keen on 4WDs but willing to consider anything at this point.
We need a car that has 4 attachment for baby/children's car seats and fits them in width wise. We currently have a Citron Picasso but doesn't have the 4th in the back. Any suggestions? Thanks
The Kia carnival has 4 or 5 anchorage points if this helps??
The Mitsubishi Grandis has been discontinued. We went to the dealership last week to try and look at one and they are no more!
I was wondering if 2 000 MAZDA MPV LW Series 1 is a people mover
You forgot peugeots 308 touring wagon it has 7 seats which are fantastic, they can be moved around or removed altogether.
Thanks Janet, we'll add it to the list!
Also would like to mention the mitsubishi delica . we have one its an 8 seater ,they do come as 7 seaters as well and they are a 4x4. we love ours .
I'm currently hunting for a 7 seater. I will be rating my choice primarily by price. Do you know of a list of 7 seaters that are listed by price??
Nissan PATROL?? 7 seater option??
Thanks Asqueroso. We would love to be able to include prices but with the change in laws in relation to advertised price this makes it difficult. This is because the advertised price for cars must be the total cost and include dealer delivery, registration, CTP and stamp duty. Given that these costs vary from state to state for the government statutory charges and vary from dealer to dealer for the delivery charges it is only the dealers that can provide you with the exact cost of a particular model. We are working with manufacturers to be able to provide this important information and will show a RRP where possible.
I would like to know the cars prices, where can I find them? I really need a bigger car, because I'm thinking about another baby. Melissa, I hope you can provide this information thanks
Hi, we are looking for a 7 seater that will fit 2 child seats with some ease as well as give us plenty of room in the back if once the 6th/7th seat is occupied.
Hi Eric, the Volvo XC90 is the 7 seater and one of the most popular 7 seater European cars on the road!
Hi. We are looking for a car that will fit 3 car seats. I like the Kluger but the sales people cant tell me if you can fit 3 seats and a baby capsule - nor do they seem to have 3 anchorage points. With kids needing car seats until the age of 7 this must be an issue for other parents. Can you suggest any other cars (7 seaters) that might be good?
Thanks very much for this list, I've been looking everywhere, you may want to add Mazda MPV.
Hi Kirsten, The Mitsubishi Grandis is still around. Maybe the dealer you went to didn't have any stock??
Andrea, we have a Kluger 7 seater and we also have 5kids! teenagers right down to a four year old.... I couldnt rec. the Kluger more. The middle row of seats adjusts to multiple places and the rear storage is much larger than most other 7seaters. YES it does have three anchorage points, along the three middle rows of seats. We love our Kluger! :)
Hi, We currently have a 05 model Toyota Prado but would like to sell because of the fuel consuption. Any ideas on what we could by next...would like it to be 4 cylinders, dielsiel,auto,7 seats & not a mini van... is there such a car that doest cost a fortune$$$$? Leisa
I am looking at the new Nissan Dualis +2. It is auto, 2.0L petrol (not overly gutsy but perfect as a mum car around town), very fuel efficient and has 7 seats (3 anchor points in middle row, back two seats are for kids or adults up to 165cm otherwise you would need to duck your head down) and it is around $33k drive away. It has the SUV feel, high position etc.. but it is not 4WD. Have a look, Im definatley considering one
Anyone please help.... I am deciding between Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe??? Anyone has any experiences with either? How much did you buy it for? Thanks
Susie, the Ford Territory 7 seater has 5 anchor points. The middle row's are all on the back of the seats, and the 3rd row are on the floor. Also can fit 3 car seat/capsules no worries side by side in the middle row. Only problem is that once the 3rd row is up you can only fit a umbrella stroller in the boot area. The Kia Grand Carnival on the other hand is a van but will fit 6 kids with anchor points and has a deep boot.
I would really like to know which SUV's have the most space. Many I have looked at have very little boot space and with kids aged from 10 - 16 I really need the room for school bags etc. The other issue is if we go away on holidays, the kids will only have space for "hand luggage'! Any thoughts?
has anyone with 3 or above kids bought the dualis 2? A review please? I am not sure if it will be big enough for three kids but like the look and the price
I have 4 boys - aged 6,5,4 & 18mths. I have an Audi Q7 and have a baby seat & 2 infa vario full booster seats across the second row and I have my eldest in the very back row also in a booster seat so I can have the other seat next to him down to fit in Mountain Buggy pram and shopping. Very good on space but I doubt it would fit 4 teenage boys. Think I will need a Troup Carrier by then!!
I saw an Audi A6 wagon in a car park today with 2 reverse seats in the boot (ie. the seats look out the rear boot window). I thought it looked really good. I can't see that option on their website - do you know if this would be a special order vehicle? Is it ok to have rear facing seats??
Great list, would you be able to include ancor points info? I have so much trouble working that out everwhere I look.
hi can anyone tell me if there's a 7or 8 seater 4WD that is a hybrid, avilable in Australia?
hi can anyone tell me if there's a 7or 8 seater 4WD that is a hybrid, avilable in Australia?
Hi KV, there are no hybrids with more than 5 seats in aus at the moment.
looking for a 7 seater thats not a van and that has 4 anchor points, We have two boys under 5 and are expecting twins so we still need to have some boot space for a double pram if the third row of seats are folding, need some advice thanks
We have four children aged 14 to 9 and have a MAZDA CX9. We chose it over the Ford territory because when someone has to come out from the back row, in the Ford Territory they have to step over the folded middle seat and I was concerned they would fall, nose first, out of the car. This isn't the case with the Mazda CX9.
We also have a HYUNDAI IMax, it has the biggest boot ever, the space for each person is amazing, even compared with the Volkswage Multivan, with a better price than many minivans that size. Turbo Diesel so it doesn't consume too much but still has enough power, and it's an 8 seater. Great for everyday and also for trips. We love it.
Great site, thanks. I've been told that there may be insurance issues with installing the rear seats in a Peugeot 308 Wagon (they're a $1200 extra, not standard) but haven't checked it with the dealer or insurance co yet. Anyone know anything about this?
I have a KIA Grand Carnival - which I love for the space.. but we want to go 4WD and camping. I have 4 children - does anyone know of a 4WD with the same space as the Grand Carnival? Preferably auto :)
It would be good to classify these all into price brackets for the base model. And include some basic info about the cars fuel consumption, pros and cons etc.
The Lexus LX570 has 7 seats 160 grand though
my family are looking in to buying a toyota avensis, they look good and fit seven people and drive well but they are pretty expesive unless we can find a deisel model we may look at other people carriers any suggestions

Of all the seven seaters, the volvo has the most luggage space when all seven seats are in use.
Hi We are looking to buy 4 WD with a true 7 adult seats. What do you recommend.
Hi I need an 8 seater vehicle but don't want a crappy automatic what is available with a manual transmission? What about the Nissan El Grand? Is that available in manual?
The Honda MDX is a fantastic car and has not received a mention. We can have 5 child seats in this vehicle. The seats fold FLAT in the back if not in use, so u don't lose space, like in a prado or similar design with "hang up" seats. Very roomy. Love mine passionately
We've recently bought the new diesel Ford Territory. Carries 3 full size baby seats across the second row and has 2 anchor points in the 3rd row. Great fuel economy and so quiet! Dealer discounted by $10k off RRP so don't get too hung up on prices until you've wheeled and dealed...
I am looking for a 7 seater car for someone who is coming to Melbourne for 6 months - Therefore wondered if anyone knew of a good place that did long term rentals? Many thanks
I'm onto my second Volvo XC90 - looked far and wide for options but found this to be the most flexible and comfortable interior for us - we have 4 children 7-14. The best thing is that the third row seats (leather) have head airbags, and they can be independently folded flat, so when there's only 6 in the car we can load a heap of luggage in as well. Access to the rear is fantastic and with our current one being diesel it's economical too.
Nissan xtrail you can fit 3 car seats in the backs and it has a good boot to put prams etc in

We are looking for medium size suv 7 seater with 5 star safty rating and fuel efficient car under 2 years old. We like the toyota kluga and mazda cx 9 but they dont come in desiel. Next choice is Captiva, sorrento and santa fe which is korean made. How reliable are they? Or are we better off buying older european suv.
my wife and myself have three kids already and going to have one more soon we need to buy a van or four wheel drive that has 6 or 7 seats and need to the prices of them new and used can you help me
Hi Ashley, if you visit carsales.com.au or redbook.com.au you can find out the prices of new and used cars.
On the SUV front we did a "can you fit the pregnant lady in the back" and "what can you fit behind the 3rd row of seats" test before we decided on the CX9 - well it wasn't really a hard decision as it was really the only choice. None of the others sadly had any room with the 3rd row of seats up and you're going to need that if you have a pram and 3 kids. On another front I'd be very interested in any info on whether Renault will be bringing their Espace out here. It's a great option for a people mover.
Hi Karen, We have 4 kids 5 and under, we looked at the Q7, Merc GL, and XC90. We ended up getting the XC90. We have our 5yr and 3yr old in the third row, the 5yr old can put his own seat belt on and the 3yr sits on the passenger side in the 3rd row and we keep the 2nd row seat folded down for the kids to get in and out and its easy for us to put the 3yr olds seat on from there. Our new born and 2yr old sit side by side in the 2nd row, its snug but it works. the reason we went with the XC90 was it has the largest boot space behind the 3rd row in all the SUV's.
We have an x trail and can not fit 3 car seats in the back we need a 7 seater.
Hi Shane thanks for the reply. Just a question though how do you anchor the child seats in the 3 rd row, we were told the Xc90 only have 3 anchor points in the second row, none in the third row. Agree about the boot space.
We were looking to buy the Chrysler Voyager a couple of weeks ago- but they've run them all out and have stopped production ahead of a new one coming out mid year next year (although they said late next year for Australia). We didn't look interstate as it took us a week just to find out the correct details for WA and that the very last limited edition had just been sold and we gave up. They tried to sell us the dodge journey instead, but needing 4 kids seats I couldn't put 3 in the middle row as then I wouldn't be able to access seats in the back (and no boot space).
ALL of the 7/8 seaters look soooo difficult to get into unless you use a people mover style, but I don't want to purchase one of those until the next Chrysler model comes out. What's the most 'accessible' back row as far as the SUV styles go? (also that will fit a pram in the back).
Hi we have just had our first child and planning on a couple more down the track. At the moment we have a suzuki swift (not really practical even with one child and very squashy with the baby seat) I am really confused about what to get I just want something to see us long term and that is good value for money.
